Imagine a place where a neighbour brings in a broken lamp, and leaves an hour later with it working — and with a new skill to boot. Where someone saving money, borrows a pressure washer rather than buys one. Where people who’ve never met find themselves chatting over a soldering iron. That place exists in Portsmouth, and we need someone special to help keep it running.
The Portsmouth Library of Things and Repair Café is part of a growing movement that’s genuinely changing how people think about stuff — sharing it, mending it, and valuing it. As our Hub Lead, you’d be at the centre of all of it: welcoming visitors, supporting a brilliant team of volunteers, keeping the space ticking, and making sure every session runs smoothly.
This isn’t a behind-the-scenes role. It’s hands-on, people-facing, and genuinely varied — from coordinating repair sessions and managing lending, to maintaining records and being a cheerful, reliable presence that everyone (visitors and volunteers alike) can count on.
What kind of person are we looking for?
- People person
- Organised & reliable
- Sustainability-minded
- Comfortable with computers
- Community-driven
You don’t need a background in repair or DIY (though it’s a bonus if you do). What matters most is that you’re warm, dependable, and genuinely care about making a difference locally. Experience in hospitality, retail, volunteering, or community work would all translate brilliantly.
In return, you’ll gain real experience in a community-led environmental organisation, develop skills in coordination and volunteer management, and — honestly — feel pretty good about how you’re spending your Wednesdays through Saturdays.
The deadline is Monday 15 June 2026 at midday, and if you’d like a look around before applying, Clare would love to show you the space.
