Have you heard the disturbing stat that the UK is the world’s 2nd biggest producer of e-waste per capita?  Or that over 36% of electrical items taken to the tip are still working?

Why? is the obvious next question, and of course it’s complex, but the good news is that in Portsmouth, whilst we hoard a lot of unused tech, research shows that people want to do the right thing with it but aren’t sure where to start.

In January 2024, we ran the city’s first e-waste amnesty week.  We have developed a map of the city, showing where residents can take their unwanted tech to donate, sell, repair or recycle, and the amnesty week had a focus on ‘donating with purpose’, nudging residents to donate their unused working tech to local charities, to support their work and be good for the planet.

But behaviour doesn’t change overnight, and we want to build the momentum and run the city’s 2nd e-waste amnesty week in January 2025, timed to encourage people to clear out unused tech with New Year resolutions and after having got newer tech for Christmas.

Last year’s week was sponsored by Virgin Media O2, and we are now looking for a more local sponsor to support 2025’s activity.  Could this be you?  If you’d like to find out more about the sponsorship opportunities ranging from £250 to £750, please email Clare today.
